Below you will find a step-by-step instruction guide on how to pair the Google Assistant with your Sonos equipment.

You need to have both the Google Home app and the Sonos app on your smartphone for this. Be sure to have the password for your Sonos account at hand.

In July 2019, Sonos released an update making it possible to use the Google Assistant with Sonos. However, this pairing was limited to three Sonos models: the Sonos One, Beam and Move (these speakers have a built-in microphone). Do you not have one of the above models but want to operate the speakers with the Google Assistant, for example through a Citation One? This is possible, but with a slight detour.

  1. Open the Sonos app and select ‘Voice Services’: The Sonos currently supports Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant. For use with Google Home, choose the Google Assistant.  Be sure to have your Sonos account username/email address and password at hand. Did you forget your password? No worries, you can easily reset it.
  2. Once you have logged in, Sonos will ask your permission to set up the required permissions for Google Home. If this is successful, you are done. You will see that all of your Sonos speakers have been separately added and are displayed among your other devices in your Google Home-app.
  3. Now you can opt to rename the devices within the Google Home app. You can also add various Sonos devices to the correct Google Home home and the room where the Sonos speaker is located.
  4. When the installation is complete you can start giving voice commands: For example, say to one of the Citation speakers supported by Google Chromecast: ‘OK, Google: Play Roxette on Sonos’ ‘Play the Favourites playlist on Sonos’, etc.

If you have several Sonos speakers, you will have to configure each one separately. This can take some time, but on the other hand you now can choose the speakers on which you would like to install the Assistant.

This way you can use the Google Assistant to control, your Sonos equipment through one of the Citation speakers supported by Google Chromecast.

NOTE: It is not (yet) possible to have your Sonos speakers play along in a group with your other speakers.
