Adding songs to the queue to play next 

You can manually change the order in which songs are played in the Music app or in iTunes, or place music in a queue for your Apple TV or HomePod.



Specifying what is played next on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Android device 

  • In the Music app on your iOS device or in the Apple Music app or Android1, search for a song, album or playlist you want to listen to after the current song. 
  • Press down firmly on the selected part to use 3D Touch or hold down your finger on the item for a long while, then tap ‘Play Next’ or ‘Play Later’2.

You can also select an album or playlist and then tapon your iPhone or on your Android device and than choose ‘Play Next’ or ‘Play Later’ on your iOS device or Android phone2.


The song or songs on the album or the playlist will be added to the ‘Up Next’ queue. Songs you want to play next will be displayed at the top of the queue and songs you want to play later will be displayed at the bottom of the queue. If you want to view the ‘Up Next’ queue, tap or swipe up on the player at the bottom of the screen to open the ‘Now Playing’ screen and then scroll down.


To edit the order of the queue, presson your iOS device oron your Android and drag the songs up or down. If you want to remove an item from the ‘Up Next’ queue, swipe left and then tap ‘Remove’. If you want to play a new album or new playlist, an option will be displayed to keep or clear the ‘Up Next’ queue.


1 You can also create a queue with podcast episodes in the Podcasts app on your iOS device. 

2 Depending on the number of items in your queue, you may not see ‘Play Later’.


On a Mac or PC

  • In iTunes, search for a song, album or playlist to listen to after the music that is currently being played2.
  • Right-click on the item and select ‘Play Next’ or ‘Play Later’3


Songs you want to play next will be displayed at the top of the queue and songs you want to play later will be displayed at the bottom of the queue.


If you want to view the ‘Up Next’ queue, tapat the top of the iTunes window . If you want to change the order in the queue, click on a song and keep the mouse depressed. Then drag the song up or down in the queue. 

If you want to remove an item from the ‘Up Next’ queue, hold the pointer over the item and tap onin the upper left corner.


If you want to play a new album or new playlist, an option will be displayed to keep or clear the ‘Up Next’ queue by pressing.

On an Apple TV or HomePod 

If there is an Apple TV or HomePod nearby and you have an Apple Music subscription, you can use the Music app on your iPhone or iPad or iPod touch to specify what will be played next4 Open the Music app on your iOS device. Tap or swipe up on the player at the bottom of the screen to open the ‘Now Playing’ screen and then tap.

 

Separate cards will be displayed for every Apple TV or HomePod, just as the main options for using AirPlay to stream audio from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to another device. Tap the card of the device you want to control. After tapping the card for the device, you will see what is currently being played in the Music app, and the ‘Up Next’ queue for that Apple TV or HomePod will also be displayed.


If you select music for ‘Play Next’ or ‘Play Later’ or drag songs in the ‘Up Next’ queue up or down, this will affect the playback order for that specific device. If you have another Apple TV or HomePod in another room, you can create separate queues for those devices5

On the home screen of your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote, press and hold. Then swipe right on the Touch surface to view additional audio destinations.


Making shared queues 

If you are at a friend’s house or if guests have come to visit you, you can jointly control the ‘Up Next’ queue for an Apple TV or HomePod6. Guests must have Apple Music to add songs to a queue. If you have no subscription, you can only change the order of the songs in the queue. Open the Music app on your iOS device. Tap or swipe up on the player at the bottom of the screen to open the ‘Now Playing’ screen and then tap and tap the card of the device whose queue you want to control. Changes someone makes to the ‘Up Next’ queue will also be displayed on the device of other users if they control the ‘Up Next’ queue for the shared Apple TV or HomePod.


Before you can share control, you must ensure that you have the most recent version of iOS.
