If you are unable to stream content with AirPlay, read here what you can do:
Make sure that your devices are enabled and close-by
Check whether your AirPlay-capable devices are enabled. If the Apple TV is in hibernation mode and is using the Ethernet, you must wake the Apple TV from hibernation mode using a remote control. Make sure your AirPlay-capable device is near the device from which you are trying to stream. If you cannot connect to an AirPlay device, you can try moving the device closer and try again. If you want to stream audio to multiple speakers with AirPlay 2, check if your speakers are compatible with AirPlay 2. Our CITATION 300 and CITATION 500 speakers support AirPlay 2.
Check for updates
Make sure all of your devices are compatible with AirPlay and have been updated to the most recent software version. Find out how you can check for updates on:
Connect your devices to the same WiFi network
- iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: go to ‘Settings’ > ‘WiFi’. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- Apple TV: go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Network’. If you use Ethernet for the Apple TV, check whether the cable is connected to the router you use for WiFi.
- Mac: click the wifi icon in the menu bar.
- HomePod*: HomePod uses the same WiFi network as the iOS device with which it was configured. If your iOS device is near the HomePod and is connected to another WiFi network, the warning ‘WiFi network’ will be displayed in the Home app. To connect the HomePod to the same WiFi network as your iOS device, open the Home app, keep ‘HomePod’ pressed, tap ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Move HomePod to [WiFi network]’ at the top of the screen.
Check your AirPlay settings
If you cannot use AirPlay via an apple TV or HomePod, check the AirPlay settings for that device. You may have limited as to who can stream via AirPlay on Apple TV. You may have limited speaker access on the HomePod*. (See FAQ.) For AirPlay 2, it may be necessary to invite others in the home so that they can use AirPlay through your devices. (See FAQ.) If you use a Mac or PC, you cannot use AirPlay to HomePod if you select ‘Only People Sharing This Home’.
If the music unexpectedly stops playing
If the music unexpectedly stops playing, use your device or Siri to restart the music playback. In some situations, the Home app can use your HomePod*, Apple TV or AirPlay-capable speaker as the main audio source for streaming music (even if your HomePod* or Apple TV is currently not playing any music). Music playback can be stopped everywhere by using Siri on that device or performing another task. You can also use an iOS device or computer with iTunes as an audio source for streaming music manually.
If you have picture but no sound
If you do not have audio when streaming video from your iOS device or Mac to your speakers, make sure that the volume is set higher and is not on mute on either the iOS device or receiver. If you are streaming video from an iPhone or iPad, check the ringer switch. You will see an orange stripe on the switch if the ringer is in silent mode. Slide the switch to enable the ringer.
If content is interrupted or there is network delay
If you have a weak WiFi signal or if a near-by device (such as a microwave or baby monitor) is causing interference, try the following:
- Check whether you are using the recommended settings for the WiFi router.
- Move other devices that could cause interference or turn them off.
- If you are trying to stream to Apple TV via AirPlay, try to connect your Apple TV directly to your router with an Ethernet cable instead of using WiFi.
The AirPlay connection may be interrupted if you lock the device, enable hibernation mode or switch to another app. If you are still unable to use AirPlay after having tried the above steps, please contact Apple Support.
*HomePod is not available in all countries or regions.
